Geographic
range: Neotropical: C. sanblasiana
is endemic to W Mexico ranging from Nayarit to Guerrero. It can be
found from sea level up to 1200 m above sea level. Physical
characteristics: Quite a large (32 - 34
cm) jay with black head and uderparts. Upperpars are blue, as well
as undertai coverts, which can be darker blue.
In adults, eyes are yellowish, bill black and legs dull yellow. In
Juveniles eyes are brown and bill yellowish.
Both adults and juveniles posses an erectile crest which is longer
in younger birds. Crest can be held flattened and thus sometimes invisible.
Reproduction: As all memebers of
genus Cissilopha, San blas jay is a cooperative breeder. Clutch typically
consists of 2 - 3 pale pinkish buff eggs. Behavior:
Almost exclusively found in groups. Flocks typicaly count in between
15 - 20 birds and forage low to high in canopy and often on or near
the ground.
Habitat: Found principaly in arid to semihumid forests and
forest edges.
